Consultative Workshop on Medicinal Plants Explores Export Opportunities and Challenges

A consultative workshop on “Medicinal Plants: Prospects and Challenges - Special Reference to Export-Oriented Marketing” was held to explore the sector’s future potential and address the hurdles, especially in international markets was held at Thrissur on 24th March 2025.

The workshop was officially inaugurated by Dr. Rajan N Khobragade IAS, Additional Chief Secretary, Health & Family Welfare, Government of Kerala, who emphasized medicinal plants’ critical role in boosting the state’s economy and promoting traditional medicine globally.

Dr. T K Hrideek, Chief Executive Officer of the State Medicinal Plants Board (SMPB), delivered the presidential address, highlighting the urgent need to strengthen the value chain and improve quality standards to meet global demands.

The technical sessions featured a distinguished panel of experts. Dr. P Madhavankutty Varier set the stage with insights into the historical significance and emerging trends in medicinal plant use. Dr. Manish Pande, Director of the Quality Council of India, stressed the importance of adhering to international quality benchmarks to enhance competitiveness. Mr. Ashuthosh Srivastava, Deputy Director of AYUSH EXCIL, Ministry of AYUSH, discussed export strategies and global market dynamics.

Adding to the discussions, Dr. S D Singh IFS (Retired), Senior Consultant in Forestry and Agroforestry, shared perspectives on sustainable sourcing and cultivation practices, and Dr Jayanthy A, Principal Scientific Officer at the Pharmacopoeia Commission for Indian Medicine & Homoeopathy, elaborated on standardization and regulatory frameworks essential for global acceptance.

The workshop concluded with a consensus on the need for a coordinated approach involving growers, researchers, industry players, and policymakers to realise the full potential of India’s rich medicinal plant heritage in the international marketplace.
